Series: Second Sight, #1
Publication: April 27th 2012
Genre: New Adult Paranormal Romance
Two years ago, 21-year-old Kate Edwards became deathly ill and slipped into a coma. While unconscious, she crept into the mind of a missing boy and awoke with the knowledge of his location. Friends and family were skeptical and wary of her new ability to see into the minds of others. Their fears prompted Kate to keep her psychic powers a secret. Feeling alienated, she dropped out of college and spent most of her days holed up at her mother's home.
Now another child has been abducted. Police detective Jared Corbett seeks out Kate for her help in solving the case. Reluctantly, Kate agrees and they must work together to bring 8-year-old Cori Preston home to her family. Although attracted to one another, Jared has a girlfriend with ties to the abduction case and Kate is sarcastic and guarded since her coma. With visions she can't control and an uncontrollable attraction to the detective, she wonders if she can leave the past behind and finally stop hiding from the world. Otherwise, Cori may be lost forever.
My Thoughts
This story had none of the quicksilver action scenes that some books do, but a more a slow-burning flame that only burns brighter as the story continues.
There are many different ways a book can be written. Some books are written to seem quite youthful and other book have a more mature element to it. First Visions is the latter - and that's what I enjoyed about it. The relationships between the characters seemed more earthy and real. There were moral dilemmas and characters having to face up to who and what you truly were after years of being forced to live in denial. I could actually see Kate and Jared as real people and not just characters. That's what made the couple special.
Even the bad elements of this book seemed to make the book even better. They were real-life problems even if there were parts of the paranormal involved. The plot line reminded me of other books I had read and really enjoyed and I felt like I had slipped into a pair of familiar warm fuzzy slippers. The romance between the characters was sweet.
The writing was really nice, even though in some places it did feel rather flat. There were parts of the story where I really wanted to feel for the characters, but I felt kind of disconnected from them. I have to say it wasn't all the time and it certainly wasn't enough to make me stop reading. I really enjoyed the way the paranormal side of it was dealt with. Kate's ability wasn't over the top and the way she developed it was done in a way where I could imagine it happening.
Overall, I would have to say that this 'new adult' read was enjoyable and I would recommend it to paranormal-romance readers.
